Ron Johnson: Two Decades in the Agency Trenches

From Operator to Strategic Consolidator
My career hasn’t been defined by jumping from trend to trend; it’s been defined by stability, execution, and strategy. For over twenty years, I’ve been immersed in the world of digital agencies—first as a hands-on founder obsessed with client success, and later as the strategic operator behind CyberOptik.
The Big Shift
The biggest shift came when I realized sustainable growth wasn’t just about winning new clients, but about consolidating the best operations and talent already in the market. That realization led to my current focus: agency acquisitions.
Unique Perspective
Today, my perspective is unique: I am an active operator who manages a growing, integrated agency network. I don’t just talk about agency growth—I live the complexity of client stewardship, team integration, and operational scaling every single day.
Wisdom of the Operational Architect
I consider myself an architect of stability. Most people see the transaction when an agency is acquired; I see the complex integration of teams, processes, and technologies.
My experience with over a dozen strategic acquisitions and counting means I bring tested, hard-won wisdom to every decision, whether it’s on a stage or in a deal room. I know what works, what breaks, and, most importantly, how to honor the trust sellers place in us.
Timeline
My Journey So Far
2002
Founded CyberOptik
A lifetime entrepreneur, I started CyberOptik at 14 years old, while living in Elmhurst, IL and attending middle school. Starting out, I built websites using Geocities before moving to raw HTML coding and hosted website myself very early on.
2010
Going Full Time
While attending Elmhurst College, I continued to manage the business and started to recruit freelancers to help build the business. After graduating, I immediate went full time in the agency.
2012
Exclusive with WordPress
WordPress, starting as a blogging platform, quickly began to show potential as a full website building solution. Less than ten years after it’s initial launch, I made the decision to offer website solutions exclusively built on the WordPress content management platform.
2019
First Aquisition
After years of professional collaboration with Warren Greeley as a freelancer, I acquired his creative studio to bring on Warren full time as CyberOptik’s project manager. His small portfolio of clients came along to join the CyberOptik family, many of whom are still with us today. Warren has since become our Creative and Operations Director, helping oversee our creative services and provide a smooth transition for newly acquired clients.
2025
First Acquisition Keynote
By 2025, CyberOptik had grown to a team of twenty five to service over 600 active clients all around the United States. With twelve acquisitions under my belt, accounting for roughly half of our book of business, I was invited to present to the Barfly community of fellow web developers and agency owners about my Acquisition journey. In the same year, I also presented and participated in a panel at the Brainstorm conference.
Now
Growing Faster Than Ever
Presently, CyberOptik serves over 800 active clients all around the USA, providing web design, development, marketing, branding, hosting, maintenance, and support services. Our team has grown to over thirty absolute rockstars who help provide exceptional customer experience as we scale faster every year. I’m currently working on closing several more acquisitions before the end of this year.

Beyond the Digital Desk
While strategic growth is my passion, balance is key to sustainable leadership.
When I step away from the business of integration and growth, you can usually find me caring for my ever-growing jungle of an office, spending time with my amazing family, or traveling across the country and the Caribbean. This perspective reminds me that the core of every business we acquire is a human story, a team, and a life’s work that deserves thoughtful stewardship.
